1. What are the two main functions of the cytoplasmic membrane and what are the main biopolymers that comprise this boundary?

2. Why are lipids not considered macromolecules as compared to the other classesof biopolymers that we have studied.

3. Define the terms OSMOSIS and PLASMOLYSIS. Explain how they apply tobacterial cells in the environment and give specific examples.

4.What are the two types of bonds which are responsible for the shape ofeubacterial cells?

1.) The basic functionof the cell membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings. Helps in the transport of moleculea through carriers , channels or pumps etc .The main biopolymers consists of the phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins.

2.) Lipidsare formed when a glycerol molecule combines with compounds called fatty acids, therefore they are not polymers because they contain one molecule and are not macromolecules.Polymer = Several smaller, similar units in a chain to create a larger molecule with new properties. Lipids = have no single sub-unit.

3.)Osmosis is the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules through a semi-permeable membrane into a region of higher solute concentration, in the direction that tends to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides.Plasmolysis is the shrinking or contraction of the protoplasm away from the wall of a living plant or bacterial cell, caused by loss of water through osmosis. Plasmolysis occurs by adding sugar in case jams or salts in pickles or meat that kills bacterial cells through plasmolysis.
