  6. Process Automation
  7. To work in parallel with product development or kaizen teams for continuous improvement of processes

Working of Operations in Business

Any business activity requires conversion of inputs into outputs. Business activity can be manufacturing a product or producing a service. In broader terms, marketing department of an organization declares the sales target and depending upon the forecasted demand (sometimes actual orders received for product) the manufacturing begins. In any product making organization, these activities are classified into three types, mass production, batch production, and job production. Automobile and pharmaceutical industry are examples of mass production where cars, bikes, and medicines respectively are manufactured. Electronic equipments like circuit breakers are manufactured in batches. Ship, aircraft, heat exchanger, and many more are a part of job production. Recently, the service factor is playing a vital role in successful customer satisfaction. Operations function comes into play from the sales team member or customer service member receiving the order till delivery of the product or service.

The two challenges faced in operations management are

  1. Employee participation - All the activities in a process are carried out by humans. Very few tasks are completed by robots. Automated machines are also operated by human. So, the employees involved in the process better know about the problems faced while completing the activities. Understanding the mindset of employees and their approach towards work helps operations manager make the most out of any process.
  2. Supply Chain Management - The basic meaning behind this terminology is everyone involved in the chain from supplier's supplier to customer's customer. Failure to prove oneself at any stage will affect the supply chain reducing overall efficiency of the system and delayed delivery of products to customer. Ultimately, resulting in lossess.

  1. proactive approach during recruitment, background check, employee training, and motivation.
  2. Development of suppliers, explanation of customer requirement to everyone in the supply chain.
