When two drugs are mixed and used, their combined action can be weakened or enhanced depending upon the interaction between both the antibiotics. If the combined action of both the antibiotics is greater than the sum of their individual actions, they are said to be in a synergistic relationship. If the combined action of both the antibiotics is lesser than the sum of their individual actions, they are said to be in the antagonistic relationship.

To check the relationship between two antibiotics, grow susceptible cells in the presence of two antibiotics separately and compare their growth with bacterial growth in a plate where both antibiotics are added. If both antibiotics are synergistic, the growth of bacteria in the plate with two antibiotics will be lesser than the individual plates. If the antibiotics are antagonistic to each other, the growth of bacteria in the plate containing two antibiotics will be greater than in plates with single antibiotics.
