Answer #1

Answer:

Cholera is a water-borne  enteric disease characterized by rice-water stools and vomiting. It is a severe disease and if left untreated can be fatal.  The severity of disease depends on the dose of Vibrio cholerae ingested.

The treatment involves, first and foremost, rehydration of the patient with appropriate ORS as large amounts of water and electrolytes are lost in the bouts of diarrhea and vomiting.
The best antimicrobial effective against cholera is doxycycline (derived from tetracycline) for adults. For children macrolides like Erythromycin or Azithromycin work better. Even single doses of these antimicrobials given, show immediate effect against Vibrio cholerae.
The least effective antimicrobial agent would be Penicillin which is only effective against gram-positive bacteria. Vibrio cholerae is a gram-negative comma shaped bacteria.
