Subscribe The question I'd like everyone to consider this week is: Do the examples or stories used in a speech have to be trup? If so, why? If not, under what circumstances would it be okay to use a fictional or hypothetical account? In considering this, also talk about your feelings in regard to this example: Once, a young man in my class presented a persuasive speech encouraging everyone to wear a seat belt. In the speech, he told a heartbreaking story about how his mother had died in a car accident because she had not been wearing her seat belt. He was emotional as he presented it, and several members of the audience began to cry upon hearing it. When he finished his speech, a girl sitting near him said, "I'm so sorry about your mom. How terrible that she died that way!" He replied, "Oh, that's not true. I just told that story to make a point." Do you think this student's use of this story was appropriate and effective? i dont think stories in the speech should be entirely true as long as the intention behind it is not to decieve anyone . i think the stories can be hypothetical when a person wants to coneys something for public good like in the example as we seen below the boys has a really good intention . maybe the story wasnt true but it was not a complette lie bdecause every year a lot of death happens because of car accidents and some of them can be prevented by seat belt i think it is a charcteristic of a good orater who could convince public even when the story is hypothetical . i think one thing he could have done better was to make sure after the speech that the listner get to hear the truth
