Electron transport chain directly involved oxygen in complex IV.

Oxygen has highest reduction potential among all the electron transport chain components.

It's accept two electrons and forms water molecule.

And thus in transport of electrons, protons move into inter membrane space of mitochondria and then this creates a concentration gradient which finally makes ATP by ATP synthase through which H+ moves down their concentration gradient.

But to produce energy (ATP) from the NADH which can be produced by oxidation of pyruvate or CITRIC ACID CYCLE OF GLYCOLYSIS.

OXYGEN IS NEEDED.

BUT NIT DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN THIS PATHWAY ITSELY.
