No . according to the theory of natural selection, an evolutionary functional unit is a population consisting of number of individuals.

In a large populations with different magnitude of a specific phenotype. A specific magnitude range is selected by the nature. The individual is not undergoing evolution, but he/she is getting selected and it causes for the evolution of the population.

No. Darwin did not know about genetics as Mendel's work was not known to Darwin.But after years, it is now known that Darwin's theory is in accordance with the Genetic principles that Mendel proposed.
