The cell goes through the G2 phase to ensure the DNA replication was done correctly. In diploid cells, this phase will be mitosis, which creates two completely identical copies of the parent cell. In haploid cells, this phase will be meiosis, which creates four genetically unique haploid cells.

A cell that has finished meiosis I, but has not begun meiosis II .

Diploid

The purpose of Meiosis is to divide the genome in half, but first the DNA is doubled in replication, just as mitosis. So, a diploid (2n) germ cell becomes diploid (4c) which is then separated (in two stages) into four haploid (n) gametes.

Chromosome reduction is accomplished in Meiosis I, where homologous pairs of double stranded chromosomes are separated. Each resulting cell contains one set of double stranded chromosomes, which means that it is actually haploid, but copied . One double stranded chromosome contains two sister chromatids, which is one genome (n) plus its duplicate (n).

These cells are referred to as haploid because they have only one set of chromosomes, and to be consistent with the above notation, these cells should be referred to as haploid (2c) while the notation for gametes are haploid (1n).
