Why do lights dim if more lights or fans are turned on?
It has to do with supply and demand. When the demand increases it can lower the relative supply. Imagine a hose with water flowing out the end. if you punch a bunch of holes in the hose the amount of water that reaches the end becomes less and less. If you put enough holes in the hose eventually you wont get any water coming out of the end of the hose. That is what has been happening in India with their power outages lately. Electrical Demand exceeded supply and the system became overloaded.
This is because the potentail difference across the bulbs lowers when other lights and fans ar eturned on.
Why do you sometimes see a spark inside a toaster or toaster oven when it is turned off suddenly? Why do the lights in a room dim when the refrigerator starts up? (If you’d like, choose your own similar example.) What are the benefits of household electricity using AC as opposed to DC technology?
Why do we use Hg vapor for fluorescent light instead of Neon? Why do fluorescent lights use phosphors?
last summer was usually hot. to keep cool, my wife brought several electrical fans that were running all the time in our sun-exposed kitchen. whenever someone was not in the room, i turned the fans off but she immediately turned them back on. can you explain to me, so I can then explain to her, by using the second law of thermodynamics, the following: why it feels cooler to me in front of the fan; why turning the fans off...
Why at night, under the mercury or sodium vapor lights in a mall parking lot, do cars seem to be peculiar colors?
Lights are instantly turned on when flipping a switch because O electrons are already in the conductive material around the light bulb and those pass throug almost instantly the electric field turns on the light bulb and not the electrons O light bulbs all contain capacitors and can store a charge electrons move very fast through conductive material
LED lights cost 2-3x more than incandescent or compact fluorescent lights, but they use 50-90% less energy and last up to 27 years. Can you think of any marketing strategies to encourage low-income households to purchase LED lights and help them save on energy costs for the next two decades? (Think of the four P's: product, price, place, promotion)

6. People are driving through red lights with alarming frequency these days, but the police do not seem very invested in catching these drivers. In fact, the police spend more time going after speeders than trying to apprehend "red light runners," even though the latter are much more likely to cause a serious accident than the former. Using economic terms, tools, and concepts, suggest some possible explanations for the police behavior. Illustrate graphically.
