The short story "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin is a story based on the relationship between the two brothers, their struggles in their relationship and ultimately how they overcome their struggles and maintain a strong bond between. The story is from the perspective of an unnamed big brother, the narrator of the story. The story carries the themes of addiction, relationship conflicts between the brothers, imprisonment, and music in a flash back and present life form. This form of story helps the readers to understand the story from the perspective of big brother who has trouble keeping his promise to his mother regarding the younger brother because his the younger brother Sonny has many vices as addiction, do not have a aim in life and is rebellious. The flash back makes the readers to connect with the present of the narrator and his relationship with his younger brother in an effective manner. The paralleling form of chronological timings makes the events of narrator's and his brother's life have an impact on the emotions of the readers, as they are eased when things get better in the life of the brothers and are at distress when they are bitter.
