>> The children in this classroom are playing a game to learn more about the importance of the five colors of fruits and vegetables. Diets that are rich in fruits and vegetables may decrease the risk of cancer and other diseases. The phytochemicals that give fruits and vegetables their bright colors also help people maintain good health and energy, and protect against the effects of aging. Health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables may seem abstract to young school age children, but they can develop the habit of eating five colors of fruits and vegetables every day.

School Age Children: Teaching about Nutrition

Grocery stores and markets are filled with an attractive array of
fruits and vegetables in various shapes, colors, textures, and
flavors. However, these foods are not always familiar to children
or willingly accepted. Adults have an important responsibility to
encourage children to consume more fruits and vegetables and to try
new items they may not have previously tasted. In this chapter, you
will learn about the proteins, vitamins, and minerals that are
essential for children's growth and development and the food
sources that supply these nutrients. As you watch the video, think
about the adequacy of your diet and how you might use the
information presented to the children to make improvements of your
own.
-Why do you think the teacher chose the rainbow color
concept to teach children about the importance of eating a variety
of fruits and vegetables each day?
-What evidence demonstrated that the school's changes were having a positive effect?

When you’re done, you can send me the HTML and I’ll pop it into a site template and we can take a look.
