Please help me answer the following questions
Lab 20. Selective and Differential Media
Answer
Selective media is the growth media used for the growth of a particular/ any specific/selected microbe to grow. For example a microbe resistant to a particular antibiotic like amoxicillin, in that case, a media will be prepared which contain antibiotic amoxicillin for growth of the particular microbe (resistant to amoxicillin). Amoxicillin will not allow to grow other microbes which are sensitive to this antibiotic.
Another example : if a media is lack of a particular amino acid and that selected microbe can synthesize that amino acid its own, in this case only this selected microbe will grow in this amino acid lacking media and other microbes growth will be restricted.
Differential media is the growth media used to differentiate the microbes in growth media with the help of a special indicator (like phenol red, methylene blue) by using biochemical characteristics of microbes. this type of growth media is used for the detection of microbes and by molecular biologists to detect recombinant strains of a bacteria.

Hello please help Selective and Differential Media – What media you would use to identify your Bacteria klebsiella pneumoniae and what the outcome would be?

I need help answering the questions Part 1: Terminology and table of media 1. Go over the information in your lab manual for selective media (pages 227-228). Also, use the information for exercise 4-1, 4-2,4-3,4-4, and 4-5 to complete the table on the last page (the videos will help you as well as you go through them). 1. Define selective media and differential media. 2. What is the purpose of each of these components in selective/differential media: a. nutritional components...
Background Ques part 1) Selective and differential media; EMB and Tsl agar bacill inhabit a wide range of environments. Many are significant pathogens, such a coli, Salmonella, Shigella, but many compose our normal flora and inhabit soil and water. Many gra negative bacilli that inhabit our large intestine are called enterics. Enteric pathogens are the most frequent cause of diarrheal illnesses and have become significant contaminants spread through foo Some can also cause respiratory and urinary infections. Experiment 1: EMB...
You are given a mixed culture of two organisms in a small tube of TSB. These two organisms include a Gram-negative strain (your bacterial strain to identify) and a Gram-positive strain (a contaminant). Your first task is to isolate these organisms which will help you identify which Gram-negative strain you are working with. 1) You inoculate two streak plates on TSA media and MacConkey Agar using aseptic technique. For each medium, state whether the medium is selective, differential, or neither and...
I have these two questions that stumped me. if you could please help that would be great. In the lab you will use the voltage V and and separation d between two plates to determine the magnitude E of the electric field between plates. How would you do that? You will plot voltage vs r for two concentric rings. How is the distance r defined?
can somrone help me write an introduction for each agar. thank you ? Introduction: Selective and differential media are used frequently in Microbiology Pathology Labs to identify a known group of bacteria from a complex mix of other bacteria. The medium is designed to select against as many of the background organisms as possible by using a medium in which they will not grow but the organisms under investigation can grow hence the "Selective" part of the name. Any assayable...
Lab Report-Carbohydrates 1. Purpose 2. Special Media for Isolating Bacteria (Lab #12) a. Why are dyes such as phenol red, eosin or methylene blue added to the media? b. How does the bacterium change the media (i.e color of agar or colonies) after incubation? C. In this experiment, which media are selective, and which are differential? d. How did the results observe on the mannitol salt agar and EMB agar correlate to the Gram reaction of the bacteria? e. What...
