Question

This week, we want you to narrow down on one topic from last week and research it in more detail. The topic you pick this week will be central theme of your term paper! When picking your focused topic, you will want to research what is the strongest clinical need should you test for the disease in a healthy population, should you confirm a diagnosis in someone already suspected to have the disease, or do you need a robust way to measure whether a treatment is working? Or is there a way to prevent disease progression rather than just treating the symptoms of your disease? Once you have settled on the strongest clinical need, please research your chosen topic in more detail. Like last week, be sure to take good notes, you will be using the materials you find to write your term paper!

Breast cancer

The absolute risk of breast cancer is 1 per 300 women between the age group of 20-29. The rate of occurence is very high among young women population. Hence the need to screen for breast cancer at early stages is an privoital need. And upon age progression the life time risk increases dramaticallly where it is as high as 1 in 9 women considering the age of 85 yrs.

The risk factor for the occurence of the disease is majorly due to choice of life style (diet), menarach of a women and exposure of the individual to radiation. The higher the individual associates with these kind of risk factors the occurence of disease in this people will be exponentially higher. Apart from this factors the family history (genetics) plays a key role. The risk increases in the presence of family history.

The genes associated with breast cancer are BRCA1 and BRCA2. It has strongest association with the incident of breast caner. Where the function of both the genes are involved in repairing the DNA damage.

The screening for breast cancer should be performed for all the womens with a time intervel of 2 years after the age of 29. It can be performed either by manual examination of breast tissue for the existance of lumps, or clinically by mamography, genetic screening and by magnetic resonance imaging. Screening over ten years has repoted to decrease the rate of incidence by more than 35%.

The management of disease depends on the stage of the cancer associated. It can be treated using masectomy, hormone blocking therapy in case of hormore receptor associated breast cancer. Chemotherapy and Monoclonal antibodies are also used based on the stage of disease.
