Hints for identifying compounds in multiple-choice problems (problems 1:5); 1. Closely compare the given compounds. Determine which piece of information (molecular weight from MS, number of peaks in the NMR, presence of a special functional group in the IR, etc) would be the easiest for distinguishing between the given compounds. You might not need to use all types of given spectra to find your correct compound! 2. Based on your answer from step 1, consult the appropriate spectrum first. For...

The mass spectrum of compound A shows molecular ion peak at m/z 88. The IR spectrum of this compound has a broad peak between 3200 and 3550 cm-1. The 1H NMR spectrum of A shows the following peaks: a triplet at d 0.9, a singlet at d 1.1, one more singlet at d 1.15, and a quartet at d 1.6. The area ratio of these peaks is 3:6:1:2. The 13C NMR contains 4 signals. In the space below, propose a...

Name: 2.2 Hydrogen The relative isotopic abundance for hydrogen 2H: 1H is about 0.00016: 1, and therefore hydrogen isotopic substitutions are unlikely to play a major role in any observed (M+1) peak. The isotope 2H is called "heavy hydrogen or deuterium, and is given the symbol D. We can often provide support for mechanisms by incorporating isotopes such as 13C or D into compounds using isotopically labelled reagents. Mass spectrometry is a useful tool for analyzing such isotopic incorporation by...
