The lagging strand is discontinuosly synthesized in the direction away from the moving replication fork.

It is known that that both the strands of DNA are antiparallel. At the time of replication, DNA polymerase acts continuosly on the leading strand, whereas the lagging strand moves away from the replication fork. It occurs in small, discontinuous segments, known as Okazaki fragments.
