There are approximately 331 million people in the United States. It is estimated that 1 out of every 700 people in the US have polycystic kidney disease. That means that 699 out of every 700 people are healthy. Answer the following questions using this information, your answers to the previous question, and the Hardy-Weinberg equation. Show your work and include the variable/s you are solving for in each question.

a. What is the frequency of healthy people? (Round to the nearest four decimal points)

b. What is the frequency of the healthy allele? (Round to the nearest four decimal points)

c. What is the frequency of the allele that causes polycystic kidney disease? (Round to the nearest four decimal points)

d. How many (rounded to the nearest whole person) people in the US have each of the genotypes that causes polycystic kidney disease?

Answer #1

a. frequency of healthy people :

699 are healthy out of 700.

Frequency of healthy people = 699 / 700 = 0.9986

b. Frequency of people suffering from polycystic kidney disease:

1 out 700 are suffering.

Frequency = 1 / 700 = 0.0014

c. Frequency of the allele causing polycystic kidney disease:

Square root of people suffering from kidney disease. because each individuals suffering will have 2 alleles for the disease.

Frequency of the allele = 0.0378

d.People suffering from kidney disease are --

frequency of the genotype x total population

= 0.0014 x 331 x 10^6 = 463400 people or 0.4634 millions

People normal in the population:

Frequency of people who are normal x population

0.9986 x 331 x 10^6 = 330536600 persons. or 330.5366 millions.

In recent years, some leopard populations have suffered from a loss of habitat. You are part of a research team that is studying the effects that decreased range has on these populations. Your team observed that a portion of one population relocated to the desert and merged with another small leopard population after its own habitat was threatened by deforestation. You have been assigned to lead the study of this new population and look at its gene pool make-up. In...

Considering the above information, how would you go about completing the following question? Phenotype brown pigmentation brown pigmentation red pigmentation (strawberry leopard) Genotype SS ss Number of leopards 112 98 SS Note: S = dominant allele for brown pigmentation s = recessive allele for red pigmentation (erythrism) Over the next several questions, we will work our way through the process to determine if this leopard population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (this will include applying the Chi-square goodness-of-fit test). The occurrence of the NN blood group genotype in the US population is 1 in 400, consider NN as the homozygous recessive genotype in this population. You sample 1,000 individuals from a large population for the MN blood group, which can easily be measured since co-dominance is involved (i.e., you can detect the heterozygotes). They are typed accordingly: BLOOD TYPE GENOTYPE NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS RESULTING FREQUENCY M MM 490 0.49 MN MN 420 0.42 N NN 90 0.09 Using the...

Q3 Question 3 1 Point In a Hardy-Weinberg situation, suppose that cystic fibrosis (a rare genetic disorder caused by having two recessive alleles) occurs in approximately 1 out of 1600 births in Canada. What is the estimated proportion of the population that would be carriers for the disorder? According to CDC estimates, more than two million people in the United States are sickened each year with antibiotic-resistant infections, with at least 23,000 dying as a result. Antibiotic resistance occurs when disease-causing microbes become resistant to antibiotic drug therapy. Because this resistance is typically genetic and transferred to the next CDC, gonorrhea has an estimated 800,000 cases occurring annually, with approximately 30% of those cases resistant to any antibiotic. Assume a physician treats 7 cases of gonorrhea during a...
