AHIMA Competencies:
Domain III: Health Services Organization and Delivery A. Subdomain
Healthcare Delivery Systems: Analyzing the organization of health
care delivery in the United States.
Purpose: To engage students in case study analysis of scenarios
provided in the text Selling Our Souls.
Directions: Author a 1-2 page scholarly essay discussing what is
meant by “commodification” of health care service. Although the
text author provides a definition, you are free to look toward
scholarly sources (cited, of course) external to the text. These
should be from peer-reviewed sources, such as professional
journals, association newsletters, etc. As you share the definition
of commodification, be sure to discuss how it relates to
operational decisions within a health care entity. You do not have
to cover every single health care setting, but may want to think
about and discuss the ways in which health care is commodified
differently in a setting. By the way, this is a fine opportunity
for students to utilize their knowledge of informatics, quality
improvement, and revenue cycle to add depth to the piece.
For clarity, you will supply the following responses in a
well-written, original essay with citations in APA format:
• Define commodification of health care
service(s);
• How does commodification fit into the operational
decisions of contemporary health care organizations?
Commodification of health care system.
Commodification is the transformation of goods, services, ideas and people into commodities or objects of trade.
When health care system is transformed into trade or bussiness. It is called commodification of health care system.
It affects the healing relationship between health professionals and their patients. It is deleterious to the ethics of patient care.Patients' trust in their doctors and healthcare in general is declining and the consequences go beyond physicians' lowered status. A lack of trust can lead to decreased patient compliance, worse outcomes, corrosive physician-patient interactions, and physician burnout..
Commodification fit into the decision of the contemporary health care system because. contemporary health system relies on the contribution of human resources and health technologies. Medical devices, one aspect of health technologies, equip health care providers with tools to perform their functions effectively and efficiently.
Although medical devices provide an opportunity for a better
service, the lack of a national system for selection, procurement,
use and management may lead to a disproportionate escalation in
health care delivery costs.. The majority of the world’s population
is denied adequate, safe and reliable access to appropriate medical
devices within their health systems. The regional situation is
difficult to assess given the current gaps in knowledge and
scarcity of data. Without proper management of demand, through
actual needs assessment,
adequate procurement, proper installation, preventive maintenance,
rational usage and quality assurance, it will be difficult for
health care providers to provide health care at low costs.
