In Drosophila, the genes for black (b) body and curved (c) wings are linked on the same chromosome. The frequency of recombination between b---c is 0.276. How many recombinant offspring would be expected if 2000 progeny were produced from a testcross between a female heterozygous for both genes and a homozygous recessive male?

Answer #1

As it is said that test cross produced 2000 progeny and the recombination frequency is 0.276. So, according to the formula,

Recombination frequency= recombinant progenies from test cross/ total no. Of progenies.

So here recombination frequency is given and total no. Of progenies is also given, that mean no. Of recombinant offspring can be calculated,

0.276 = x / 2000

X = 0.276*2000 = 552

So there will be total 552 recombinant progenies.

    Genetic Linkage The six genes listed below are all located on Chromosome 2 of Drosophila melanogaster. Your goal is to construct a genetic map of Chromosome 2. That is, determine the order of these genes along chromosome 2 and the map distance in centimorgans between each gene. To complete this task, you will be given the results of a variety of two-point test crosses involving these genes. For each test cross you may assume that the female is heterozygous and...

Two true-breeding Drosophila were crossed: a normal-winged, normal-bodied female and a curved-winged, speck-bodied male. The F, all have normal wings and normal bodies. Female F1 offspring were then crossed with curved-winged, speck- bodied male flies. The following offspring of that cross were counted: 174 normal wings, normal body (Neither the allele for curved wings nor 169 curved wings, speck body that for...
