Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) or post-exposure vaccination against rabies infection is so successful because of passive antibody therapy with human anti-rabies immune globulins (HRIG). The vaccine produces antibodies against the virus and immunizes the body. The virus takes an incubation period of 4-6 days whhich is quite a long time hence post-exposure vaccination wiill help to fight the virus growth. Pre-exposure vaccines are not prefered usually as rabies is not not transmitted human to human.It does not spread in community.
