Answer #1

Question 4:(excluding intermediate reaction of glycolysis to citric acid cycle)

After two rounds of citric acid cycle, from the citric acid cycle alone,a glucose molecule would produce 6 NADH, 2 QH2 and 2 GTP.

This equals to 24 ATP overall, significantly more than glycolysis.

Explanation:

NADH is released during following conversions during citric acid cycle

1) conversion of isocitrate to alpha keto glutarate

2) conversion of alpha keto gluterate to succinyl coA

3) conversion of malate to oxalo acetate

QH2 is released during following:

1) conversion of succinate to fumerate

GTP is released during:

1)Conversion of succinyl coA to succinate

Calculation of ATP:

1 NADH = 3 ATP .( As 6 NADH are released during citric acid cycle,therefore 6× 3 = 18 ATP)

1QH2 = 2 ATP ( As 2 QH2 are released during citric acid cycle,therefore 2×2 = 4ATP)

1 GTP. = 1 ATP ( for 2 GTP 2×1 = 2 ATP)

Total sum during two cycles of citric acid = 18+4+2

= 24 ATP

Question 5:

From complete catabolism of glucose,in citric acid cycle 4 molecules of CO2 are released.

Explanation:

CO2 is released during following conversions of citric acid cycle:

1) conversion of isocitrate to alpha keto gluterate- 1 CO2

2) conversion of alpha keto gluterate to succinyl coA -1 CO2

( Total sum 1+1 = 2)

As the cycle occurs twice ,2×2 = 4.
