Answer #1

-soil organic matter(SOM) is the organic matter component of soil, consisting of plant and animal detritus at various stages of decomposition, cells and tissues of soil microbes, and substances that soil microbes synthesize. Soil organic matter also acts as a major sink and source of soil carbon .
-About 58% of the mass of organic matter exists as carbon.
-Higher levels of soil organic carbon reduce bulk density, thus providing an improved rooting environment. In addition, soil organic matter matter holds soil water, which is an important attribute for plant growth in arid and mesic environments.
