As a manager, I would apply Maslow’s theory of motivation as below to either become more productive, to feel more engaged, or to improve their commitment to their work:
- Employees would be more productive when they are satisfied with their job. This satisfaction is obtained from both internal and external factors. Applying Maslow’s theory of motivation, the basic needs such as Physiological Needs (Salary, job security) and Security Needs (benefits and stable work) would be provided to the employees. These are extrinsic factors.
- There are employees who would not be satisfied with these extrinsic factors. They seek Social Needs such as having a sense of belonging and being part of the team. These employees prefer such limelight to have the feeling of wanted so that they become more productive and committed to work. Hence, I would select such employees and provide them with responsibilities so that they feel wanted in the team.
- Esteem Needs- Once the social needs are satisfied, the employees need self-respect and a level of status to be more engaged and committed to work. As a manager, I respect and value my team members. Hence, I would respect their work and recognize them. Recognition would give a sense of responsibility and commitment for such employees.
- Self- actualization- Once the esteem needs are satisfied, the employees seek intellectual needs and aspire to be a great achiever of their targets. They acquire the ability to achieving their full potential thus becoming creative in their work. This makes them to be more productive and committed to work. I would seek their creative ideas to even solve complex problems.
