Explain the following TWO (2) terms in lean operations:

a. Kanban –

Kanban is a visual system for work management as it moves through system processes i.e.

  • A concept related to Just in time.
  • A Kanban card indicating standard quantity (of production).
  • Derived from two-bin inventory system
  • Maintain discipline of pull production
  • Authorize production and movement of goods
  • There are 6 types of Kanban: production , Withdrawal , Kanban square , signal , material & supplier.

b. Toyota production system (TPS)

  • This production system methodology was designed by Toyota motors , a Japanese company , which helps to increase the production efficiency by organizing the supply chain , logistics , minimize wastes and improve manufacturing processes.
  • This system was developed from 1948 until 1975 by Toyoda , Shingo & Ohno and helped Toyota be a market leader in automobile industry by removing many production inefficiencies.
  • TPS helps to work in the direction to remove obstacles i.e. muri , mura and muda.
  • There are 2 pillars of TPS as Just in time principle (Make what is needed , when it is needed and how much it is needed) and Jidoka (automation with a human touch).
