ANSWER

The answer to this question lies in the structure of the enzyme, HMG-CoA reductase. It is a membrane-anchored enzyme of endoplasmic reticulum which participates in the breakdown of HMG-CoA into mevalonate or mevalonic acid in the cholesterol synthesis pathway. It spans the membrane seven times and forms two regions, one is N-terminal domain and the other is C-terminal domain. Since, both these domains are hydrophobic in nature, the amino acids present on HMG-CoA reductase would be non-polar in nature. Thus HMG-CoA reductase tend to interact with lovastatin with the help of non-polar or hydrophobic amino acids.
