SDS Page: What is the purpose of running your proteins on a gel? What is the purpose of transferring them on to the nitrocellulose membrane? What direction does the protein need to travel (with regards to electrical charge) in order to bind to the membrane?

The proteins are run on a gel to get unique bands of proteins that are seperated on the basis of molecular weight as different size proteins have different speed of running onto a gel.

Purpose of transferring them to a nitrocellulose membrane is to provide a support to store them for long time for further use as gel cannot be stored for longer time.

The ionic detergent used in SDS page binds proteins and makes them negatively charged so proteins travel to the positive side.
