Hormone : Calcitonin

Calcitonin is a hormone that is controlled by a negative feedback system.

  • Calcitonin regulates calcium concentration in the blood. It helps in maintaining calcium homeostasis.
  • Calcitonin is released from parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland.
  • When blood clacium levels increases above normal, calcitonin is secreted.
  • It functions to deposit calcium into the bones by acting on osteoblasts cells.
  • Once, the blood calcium levels return to normal, the secretion of calcitonin is turned off.


When blood calcium levels decrease below normal, a hormone called PTH (Parathyroid hormone) inibits the release of calcitonin.

PTH has antagonistic effects on blood calcium levels to that of the calcitonin.
