conditional formatting?

I would like to format cell C4 to be orange if cell s4 ="E" and here's the question...

How do I then apply this condition down to as many rows as needed and allowing cells c4 and s4 to become cells c5 and s5, and so on down without manually doing a separate format for each cell??

Hi..

There are a couple of ways. Here's one

Select all of the cells you want formatted in column C from C4 on down. Then choose Conditional Formatting, New Rule and the "Use Formula..." option

Simply enter

=S4="E"

for the formula, set the format you want and "apply" and [ok] your way out of things. It will automatically assign the same relative conditional format formula to all the cells you had selected, adjusting row number as required.

Another way would be to just set up the formula in C4 and then use the "format painter" to copy the format to the other cells in column C you want to have using the same type of rule. This is a good way to continue a formatting down the sheet if you find yourself beyond where you originally set up the conditional formatting initially....

When using the Format Painter, you can click the cell with the format you wish to copy then click and hold the mousebutton and drag the painter down (or across if the occasion arises) to paint larger sections of cells.....
