Answer #1

The principal mechanism of adjustment to starvation is hormonal balance.Insulin production decreases sharply.Decreased insulin activity with increased synthesis of hormone glucagon promotes fatty acid mobilization from adipose tissue production of ketones and avialability of amino acids for gluconeogenesis.Glucocorticoids especially cortisol are important in gluconeogenesis because they promote catabolism of muscle protein to provide substrate for gluconeogenesis. However an increased adjustment characterised by decreased production of glucocorticoids and also decreased level of triiodothyronin results lowered metabolic rate.
