Research the World Health Organization (WHO) . What role do they play in the promotion of public health? What mechanisms do they use? Do any publish a peer-reviewed journal? Would you join one of these organizations? Why or why not?
World Health Organization (WHO) plays a crucial role in the directing, monitoring and coordinating the health of the people. WHO has an essential role in International public health and International public health policy. WHO controls and eliminates diseases that are highly infectious and contagious. WHO contributes greatly to improve maternal health such as maternal mortality ratio, the ratio of the births attended by skilled personnel in healthcare, adolescent birth rate, contraceptive prevalence rate, antenatal care and awareness about family planning.
WHO achieves their objectives by publishing a wide range of journals in the form of literature. Some of them are technical in nature and they are designed specifically for those who are working with WHO. These literatures published by WHO act as a teaching aid and bring awareness among the people. One such literature is Care in Normal Birth: a practical guide. Other literature such as Standards for Maternal and Neonatal Care helps the policy makers.
Personally speaking, I would join any regional body that supports WHO in order to serve the people. Though the world is advanced today in terms of its digital era, there are sections of people who still require awareness about maternal health and other public health issues. I have a passion to serve the people. Hence, without any doubt I would join one of these organizations.
