Is the “Good to Great” model by Jim Collins an effective leadership strategy in developing an ethical police department? Why or Why not? and Select the two components of this model that you think are most important to policing and defend your reasons for selecting them.

Yes, Good to Great” model by Jim Collins is an effective leadership strategy in developing an ethical police department because good to great model focuses on achieving the greatness in the department of police by recruiting the right police officers for the job. If police department have the right police officers at the right time and at the right place then police department would be able to handle the others and make the ethical environment where police officers would do their task according to their jobs and it also help the senior officers to lead the right people in the police department.

The discipline and poor performance issues being experienced in many law enforcement agencies, coupled with increasing rates of attrition, lead many researchers and practitioners to conclude that either the personal or professional needs of today’s police officers are not being addressed effectively. A lack of job satisfaction typically results in poor morale, and poor morale typically equates to low motivation to perform, which can manifest itself in the following negative results:

  • Low productivity
  • Below-average service levels
  • Poor quality control and assurance (including increased disciplinary problems)
  • Failure to run lean and increased levels of waste of limited or valuable resources
  • Failure to identify and mitigate risks to the organization

Getting the right personnel on the team and then leading them effectively toward the accomplishment of the organization’s identified and agreed-upon mission and vision are paramount to success for every nonprofit, for-profit, and government-based entity.

Two components of this model are Culture of Discipline and level 5 leadership which helps in policing because As law enforcement, we have a great deal of power and authority and we must be constantly accountable to the community we serve. There are many pressures that can instigate the slide down the slippery slope of dishonesty, malfeasance, and abuse of power. Therefore, it is incumbent upon the first-line supervisor, to nurture a culture of discipline within their squad that does the right things, at the right times, for the right reasons without emotion or prejudice and for the good of the community at-large.

level 5 leadership helps to share a passion for learning, teaching, and leading other officers in the proper way to police. Ultimately, level 5 leaders realize their success comes through making those they lead successful.
