Answer #1

1. Select a country where you could perform a foreign work assignment.

I would like to work in India on a foreign assignment. India is a huge country; a mix of demographics and a different culture. Its history dates back to several years; it has rich heritage of various cultures. It offers vast scope for growth of the firm owing to the supply of human resources and several other factors. Therefore, India would be a good firm professionally as well personally.

2. Explain and discuss why it is critical for employees (and their families) to have cultural training before embarking on an overseas assignment.

India represents different kind of cultures. Its diversified culture and habits make it difficult for foreign people to adjust easily. A number of languages are spoken by its people; it is often said that language of its people changes after every 400 to 500 km. In the absence of cultural awareness of this country, there may be issues of survival. Cultural training will ensure that eating habits, cuisines, foods, traditions, festivals are known to people of foreign nations residing in India. Awareness on these issues will make it easier to interact and understand the people at work as well in residential areas. Employees and their families will quickly settle in their new job and lifestyle; thereby making them productive by avoiding large time generally consumed for such issues.

3. Also discuss the specific cultural training you (and your family) would need in order to work in the country you chose to write about. What risks would their be to your family and to your organization if this training was not provided by the organization.

In order to work in India I and my family would require training on few major languages that are spoken in India so that it would be easy for us to understand the people. Other areas of other would be food habits, their traditions and festivals.

In the absence of specific cultural training, employees will take long time to adjust in the work environment that is so different. There are certain cultural taboos in India like way of dressing, non-consumption of meat etc. Failure to impart training in these cultural aspects may lead to employees and their families attempting to perform those acts. These acts will have serious repercussions as they are may invite wrath of people for going against their faith in their own land. Therefore, it would pose serious challenges to employees as well as organization in the event of such circumstances.
