The production of heterotrophic flagellates, which are purely herbivorous, in an upwelling region... The production of heterotrophic flagellates, which are purely herbivorous, in an upwelling region is 0.35 gCm-2d-1, and the primary production is 1.5 gcm-2 d-1. What percentage of the primary production is consumed by the heterotrophic flagellates?

Answer #1

Hey, Welcome to Chegg. I hope my answer will be of some help to you. Thank you!

Primary production is 1.5 units

Production in upwelling region is 0.35 units

Part of primary production consumed = primary production- production in upwelling region

= 1.5-0.35 = 1.15 units

Percentage of primary production consumed = (consumed part ÷ total primary production) X 100

= (1.15 ÷ 1.5) X 100 = 0.76 x 100 = 76%

    1) If you examined predator-prey relationships within an ecosystem and noticed that the removal of predators also resulted in the die-off of herbivores, what would you suspect occurred? a) Removal of predators would directly lower the number of herbivores. b) The lack of predators could mean that too much primary production occurred. c) Herbivores from another region may have entered the ecosystem and consumed the primary producers, causing death of the original herbivores species. d) Overeating by herbivores could have...

    1. Which of the following statements best describes the law of diminishing marginal utility? Consumers will purchase more of a good at a lower price, ceteris paribus. Consumers maximize total utility when the marginal utility per dollar spent is equal for all goods consumed. Each successive unit of a good consumed yields less additional utility. Consumers behave rationally when the price of a good equals the marginal utility of the good. 2. Assume the price elasticity of demand for Nike...

    • An electron, at rest, is accelerated through region 1, which has a 5000 V potential difference. It then enters region 2 where there is only a uniform magnetic field and it undergoes uniform circular motion (in a plane) of radius 0.954 mm. After subtending half a circle, the electron exits region 2, traveling in the opposite direction it was before entering region 2. Recall the selection rules for purely rotational microwave spectra: ΔJ = ±1. This came from angular momentum conservation (a photon has spin angular momentum ħ). In Raman scattering, one photon comes in and one photon goes out. What are the selection rules for rotational Raman transitions? (A) ΔJ = ±1 (B) ΔJ = 0, ±1, ±2 (C) ΔJ = 0, ±2 * (D) ΔJ = 0 This is because a photon comes in and transfers one unit of ħ to...
