One of the most important barriers to interpersonal communication is assumption. When people assume about the speaker and their background, they might not listen properly. If a counselor assumes or develop stereotype about the client, the counselor might not listen. Second barrier would be lack of empathy and becoming judgemental. If a counselor treats the client without empathy, the counselor would become judgemental thus wouldn’t be able to accept the person as they are or wouldn’t try to understand the client. Thirdly, if cultural differences persist and if the counselor fail to understand the culture of the client, it would become difficult. Finally, language differences form an important barrier thus if the counselor and the client speak different languages, they would have issues in understanding each other better.
