Human resource management is broken down into 4 steps which include, recruitment, selection, training, and performance appraisal. The main focus of recruitment is to attract applicants that match a certain job requirement. From there, the selection process involves eliminating candidates down to only those closest to the required qualifications, expertise, and potential. Selecting the best candidate and hiring them is the goal of this step. After hiring someone, it is important to train them in order to develop the qualities needed to be an asset to the company. Finally like any good ‘check and balance’ system, performance appraisal is the true test of the candidate. In this step, you can determine if and where there is a weakness in the process as a whole. If their performance review is subpar, more or different training can be applied. If the additional training yields no improvement, maybe the selection process was flawed and work needs to go into that process. If the selection process was not successful due to limited selection, the recruiting process needs to be adjusted (Certo, 2016; Heathfield, 2016). The performance appraisal step, as with any process that includes a good ‘check and balance’ system, I personally believe is the most important. I feel this way because if you have a great review step, some of your other steps can be flawed, because, this process will find the flaw and allow it to be corrected. I agree that it may cost the organization precious time and money in the short term. However, it is better than the alternative of having a flawed step with no check-in place to catch it. The business could eventually be loaded with incompetent employees, and that would cost the business well the business.
