One of the colonies of New England and chartered by James I in 1606, Virginia was established to give American territorial claims to the English and to offer a colonial market for commerce. The colony created the House of Burgesses, a bicameral legislature in 1619, and Jamestown became a successful shipping and tobacco producing colony.

A company owned by investors through stock control. Examples were operating in England and dealing with America's colonial markets. Such businesses organized and backed the colonies through British government charters and they made personal earnings while working with the public. Jamestown: Virginia Colony's first successful settlement established in May 1607. The colony was almost demolished by harsh circumstances, but supplies arrived with a new wave of colonists in 1610. In 1620, the settlement became part of London's Virginia Company. Because of absence of supplies, the population stayed small until agriculture was firmly developed. When John Rolfe introduced tobacco as a significant export and cash crop, Jamestown grew into a successful shipping port.

England wished to set up an American colony in order to improve its wealth and authority. England hoped in America to discover silver and gold. An American colony would supply raw materials that in England could not be cultivated or acquired while opening up fresh markets for trade.
