You cross two strains of yeast, one with red colonies and ethanol-sensitive and the other with white colonies and ethanol-resistant. It is known that the color gene and the resistance genes are linked and located 20 cm apart. List the three types of asci you expect to observe in the meiosis of this hybrid (draw them out) with the genotype of all 4 spores in each. Which one will be the most and which will be the least common and why? If the genes were unlinked, would you see the same thing, which asci types would you get? and what would be the predicted frequencies for those types?

Answer #1

The map distance between the two linked genes is 20cM.

The percentage of recombination is 20%

The most common type were Yeast with red colony and ethanol sensitive and the yeast with white colony and ethanol resistant as they are parental type. 80% of the yeast population is like that.

the recombinant types were only near to 20% they are. Red colony with ethanol resistance and white colony with ethanol sensivity.

If the genes are not linked the classical Mendelian ration- 9:3:3:1 may occur. the

9 Red Yeast with ethanol sensitivity: 3 Red yeast with ethanol resistant: 3White yeast with ethanol sensitivity: 1 white yeast with ethanol resistant.

A cross was performed between a yeast strain that requires histidine and methionine for growth (His-Met-) and another yeast strain, which is His+Met+. One hundred asci were dissected, and colonies were grown from the four spores in each ascus. Cells from these colonies were tested for their ability to grow on petri plates containing either minimal medium(min), min+histidine (his), min+methionine (met),or min+his+met. The number of tetrads with four spores that can grow in different type of media is shown in...

You are working with an ornamental fish that shows two color phenotypes, red or blue. The color is controlled by a single gene. These fish are hermaphrodites-meaning they can either (1) self-fertilize or (2) mate with another fish. You have three fish: fish 1, fish 2, and fish 3. While working further with this fish, you discover one other mutation (in a different gene) that leads to the recessive phenotype of long dorsal fins. Further research establishes that the genes...
