One of the characteristics of the Internet is anonymity—you can hide your identity, and so can anyone else. What are the possible effects of this on Internet support groups?

Internet support groups are there to help people to overcome depression, anxiety, and other psychological conditions. Anonymity is quite crucial for such a group be it the one providing support or the one receiving. It helps the person to put his/her thought without any filter or worry. The person going through the mess can openly share the information because of his anonymity. The other person providing the support will not know anything about the person asking for help and would oblige to help him without making any judgment about him. However, anonymity can sometimes devoid the person asking for help from saving in case he decides to commit something wrong to himself. But then, losing anonymity hurt the basic and fundamental concept of supporting the group. If people could share things with known people, they would not have needed such a group but friends or family members would suffice.
