(I am writing about the time in my life when I was overwhelmed, but I overcame it by using some coping strategies. The student can take this example as a clue)

Overwhelming means enormous, immense and which leads to stressful situations or is hard to fight. We all get overwhelmed at one or the other point of time in our lives during which we feel overburdened and stressed-out due to the situations we are in. We encounter so many events in our lives like the changes while growing up, coping with the studies, sad occasion of bereavement of family member or watching the loved ones slowly die due to fatal diseases, living up to the high expectations of parents and society and also many other happenings which demoralize us and we feel like giving up because of the crushing stress. There was a time in my life when I was overwhelmed and felt like that phase would never pass, but it did.

When I was in my first year of college, due to certain adverse conditions at home I had to work to pitch in financially for the family expenses as well as, to pay my tuition fees. When I got a job as a part-time cashier in a small departmental store initially, I was very happy to be independent and working boosted my self-confidence. As the academic year had just started I was comfortable attending and managing the college hours during the day time and working till late nights. But, soon I realized that the juggling between college and office was not going to be a smooth sailing. When the first term exams approached, I had lot of project submissions and also many subjects to study, as I had not started studying till then being busy in the later half of the day. The duty of cashier was also a huge responsibility and at the end of the day I had to tally and give the account of transactions to my boss. The lack of sleep, rest and overwhelming fear of the approaching exams made me very stressful, which started affecting my work and resulted in calculation mistakes, which I had to rectify till late night.

Working while studying was the stressor which took a toll on my physical and mental health. I failed to give my hundred percent neither to my studies nor my job. I thought I was stuck in the situation and was not able to quit the studies or the job. I was clueless about managing effectively on both the fronts. As expected I got 'D' grade in my mid-term exams, which was not shocking but very distressing. Depression started creeping in and I had the overwhelming desire to stop my education. I consulted my teachers who advised me to pursue my education for better future prospects. Their motivation and guidance helped me to cope up with my predicament.

As I was determined to overcome this problem, things started becoming easier. I read a self-help book which was very fruitful and assisted me to adopt some coping mechanisms myself to tackle my problems. I realized that many people face the same problems, which I had. Time-management techniques like making a time-table which would allocate a certain amount of my time daily to studies, reading the texts during my ride to office and back, studying during the weekly off and preparing the projects well-before the submission date. I also informed my boss about my exam-schedule and requested leave of absence during the exam. I volunteered to work on my weekly-offs. As my boss was a considerate person, he readily agreed. I started some meditation which helped me to concentrate on my work and studies. I also started taking time out to be with my friends and loved ones. The quality time spent with them was a real stress-buster which refreshed my mind.

Coping mechanisms are the methods used to seek a change in the mind-set, change in the behavior, increase in tolerance, handling emotions and diverting the emotions to another pleasant thoughts. Coping mechanisms are very effective in dealing with stressful situations. But, one must have the will-power and determination to get out of the overwhelming situations. Coping mechanisms help a person to manage the stressful situations not only outwardly, but also effect an inner change in a person.
