Answer- Socrates refers to himself as a gadfly because he bites people by his words who are self satisfied so that they are forced to consider other important things and matters of virtue . He also wants to get swatted away by people because of his words of wisdom .

He wanted to bring people into reality . He wanted to examine life and the surroundings .

He means by the metaphor gadfly that a person who constantly annoys or criticizes others so as to provoke them and to bring them into action .
