An E. coli culture is grown in a variety of very rich media. With a number of the media you are able to reduce the generation time to 20 mins. No further additions to the media reduce the doubling time below 20 mins. The supply of nutrients and building blocks are not limited. What factors could be limiting the growth rate of the cell?

Answer #1

Though E.coli organisms are grown in enough media content, the metabolic byproduct of these microbes are inhibitors of their growth. So their doubling time could be limited due to this condition.

    E. Coli has a doubling time of 20 minutes under certain growth conditions. Compute the biomass of E. coli (in pounds) that will accumulate when a single cell of E. coli grows exponentially for 50 hours in these conditions, assuming that nutrients are not limiting.   Show your work. (An E. Coli cell has a mass of 10-12gram/cell).

    6. Transposon mutagenesis was performed to identify genes that are involved in the biosynthesis of theA amino acid alanine. A wildtype culture of E. coli was infected with a defective phage carrying Tn10 A and the culture was plated on LB-tet media to obtain tet-resistant colony forming units. (LB is a rich growth media for E. coli and contains all amino acids required for bacterial growth) Individual CFU were then transferred to a multiwell plate containing liquid LB-tet media and...

Is a Culture of Entrepreneurial Problem Solving Key for India? India is a complex and chaotic place with hundreds of millions of poor citizens and a ramshackle infrastructure—particularly when compared to the gleaming new ports, highways, and airports that China has built in recent decades. Moreover, India has long been plagued by a notoriously inefficient, albeit democratic, government. But these challenges and barriers have arguably produced something remarkable in India—a problem-solving mentality that helps many Indians to quickly, cheaply, and...

Title: Development of an Adhesion Assay and Characterization of an Adhesion-Deficient Mutant of Pseudomonas fluorescens RESULTS Bacterial adhesion to sand columns. In the initial column assays with soil-and-sand mixtures, P. fluorescens PfO-1 and E. coli SLH25 had the highest and lowest adhesion values, respectively. Therefore, the sand column assay was optimized to yield the greatest difference in percent adhesion for these two strains. PfO-1 bacteria grown in minimal medium to the logarithmic phase were washed and suspended in either minimal...
