How has technology improved or impeded our communication skills

Abstract

Technology has influenced the world in many positive ways.Technology is great for communication when it comes to connecting with family and friends who live far away. But what are the effects of say: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, text messaging, etc. on every day face-to-face conversation? This paper explores the possibility of how increased exposure to communicating pathways may actually lessen communication. One way technology has advanced communication is through the birth of electronic communication devices. Cell phones, social networking websites, email, and faxes are a few examples of electronic communication devices. These devices have helped to make communication more accessible and convenient.

1. How technology improved communication skills:

In many ways technology helped us to improve communication such as

1.1 Accessibility

Technology has made communication more convenient by creating more ways to communicate. Online communication has opened the door to new ways of communicating with strangers and taking part in communities. Chat rooms, discussion forums and dating sites let people meet each other and get to know more people without having to be there in person. This is especially true with long distance communication. Internet communication devices have made staying in touch with people who live far away easy. Email, instant messaging, and social networking websites are examples of convenient ways to keep in touch with friends and family. The computer software needed for these kinds of communication is readily available, usually free, online.

1.2 Reliability

Transmitting messages electronically is often more reliable than using letters or cans connected with string. Messages sent electronically instantly reach their destination, and are hindered only by glitches or errors, which don't happen often. This means that as long as the data lines are secure, sending anything via a phone or the Internet will be unaffected by weather conditions or human error.

1.3 Communicating to the Masses

Sharing information with a large number of people is convenient with electronic communication devices. For example, many businesses and academic institutions rely on mass emailing to send information to a large number of people.
Electronic communication devices are also beneficial for personal communication. For example if you want to wish some of your friends a "Merry Christmas" you can conveniently do so with a text message.

1.4 Cost Effective Communication

Technology-based communication often helps you to save money. Instead of sending a letter, which costs you postage, you can type and send an email at no cost. Using cell phones to call long distances is another way technology has made communication more cost-effective.

2. How Technology has Affected Communication:

technology has also impacted us negatively in our daily life communication.

2.1 An Omnipresent Distraction

Cell phones and mobile devices allow users to stay connected even when away from their computers. While this can be a great benefit, especially in emergencies, it can also be a dangerous distraction. Hundreds of thousands of people suffer injuries every year in accidents involving a distracted driver, and texting and cell phone use are primary sources of distraction behind the wheel. Technology can also be a distraction at home or in the office, as always-present instant messaging applications and social networks can draw a user's attention away from more important matters.

2.2 Social Isolation

Technology can create elaborate social networks online, but these can unexpectedly lead to social isolation. In some cases, communicating online replaces face-to-face interaction for users, reducing the amount of time they actually spend in the company of other human beings. This can lead to depression and feelings of loneliness, and the lack of a support system can make it difficult for users to reach out and find help for these issues. According to Slate, polling suggests the number of adults who describe themselves as "lonely" has doubled since 1980, and that spending more time online with social networks can actually have an adverse effect on a user's happiness level.

2.3 Privacy Issues

Another potential hazard of communicating via technology is a lack of privacy. Communications you send over the Internet may be insecure, allowing third parties to read email conversations or intercept instant messages. If an outsider manages to compromise an email account or application, he may gain access to months or even years of correspondence. Encryption can help keep communications safe from prying eyes, but protecting every link in the social communication chain can be difficult. Malware authors are even beginning to target phones and mobile devices, recognizing them as always-available windows into their owners' personal lives.
