• The medulla oblongata is the primary respiratory control center. Its main function is to send signals to the muscles that control respiration.
• Increased CO2 concentration of blood causes low pH of blood.
• The respiratory centers contain chemoreceptors that detect pH levels in the blood.
• In response to a decrease in blood pH, the chemoreceptors sends signal to the respiratory centre. Then respiratory center (in the medulla ) sends nervous impulses to the external intercostal muscles and the diaphragm, to increase the breathing rate and the volume of the lungs during inhalation.
