A mother brings in her 8-year-old son with the complaint that he has been urinating frequently. You run a test on his urine and find that his urine osmolarity is 100 mOsM after not eating or drinking anything for 8 hours. Without any other information, what do you suspect might be the underlying cause of his frequent urination?

This condition of frequent urination is known as overactive bladder or POLLAKIURIA. In this condition, a child has a sudden and an uncontrollable urge to urinate.

Various other causes of frequent urination may include:-

1.Changes in his daily routine.

2. Forget to urinate when he is engaged in other activities.

3. Any other illness

4. Urinary tract infections

5. Anxiety or emotional upset ( For instance when bullied, not getting good grades,etc)

6. Constipation

7. Underlying sleep apnea

8. Nerve damage or malfunction due to which the child has difficulty in recognising the full bladder.

9. Consuming caffeinated beverages or fizzy drinks( it increases the spasms in the bladder muscle).

10. Small bladder capacity

11. Non-bacterial cysteitis

12. Changes in the chemicals in the body which may include consuming more salt.
