The Kirby-Bauer test is a qualitative method used to measure antibiotic resistance. In this method, discs containing antibiotics are placed on agar where bacteria are growing, and the antibiotics diffuse out into the agar. If an antibiotic stops the bacteria from growing, there will be circular areas around the antibiotic disc where bacteria have not grown. This is called a zone of inhibition.

The size of the zone of inhibition indicates the degree of sensitivity of bacteria to a drug. In general, a bigger area of bacteria-free media surrounding an antibiotic disk means the bacteria are more sensitive to the drug the disk contains.
