Regarding aerobic respiration, what molecules need transport assistance? What mechanism of transport is used and what type of graph would they have if you plotted speed of transport versus concentration of transported molecule?

Answer #1

The molecules which required energy for their movement from low concentration to high concentration against concentration gradient required assistance.

Active transport mechanism is used for such transport. One such example is Sodium potassium pump which moves 3 sodium ions out of the cell and 2 potassium ions inside the cell using energy of ATP.

Active transport accumulates high concentration of ions, glucose and amino acids which a cell needs.

If you plot a graph of speed of transport vs concentration of transported molecule, it will be hyperbolic. At low substrate concentration, speed will increase in linear fashion to substrate concentration. But at high substrate concentration, speed will not increase with increase in substrate concentration due to saturation leading to steady state.
