A moderately active adult female weighing 125 pounds must consume 2200 Calories of food daily.

1. If this energy is used to synthesize ATP, calculate the number of moles of ATP that would be synthesized each day (ATP/day) under standard conditions (assuming 33% efficiency). *Answer is NOT 56 or 0.9137.

2. Calculate the pounds of ATP that would be synthesized each day. The molar mass of ATP is 505 g · mol–1 and 1 lb = 2.2 kg. *Answer is NOT 63 or 1.0172.

Answer #1

Answer:

a)

To determine the number of moles of ATP

Here for ATP synthesis = 30.5 kJ/mol

2200 calories = 2200*4.184

= 9204.8J [since 1 calorie = 4.184 J]

2200 calories = 9.205 KJ

Now,

335 efficiency = 0.33

Number of ATP moles = 9.205 kJ* (1mol/30.5KJ)(0.33)

number of ATP moles = 0.0996 moles ATP

b)

To determine the number of grams of ATP

number of ATP moles * mass = 0.0996 mol ATP * (505 g /1 mol) * (1lb/2204.6g)

Number of moles of ATP = 0.0228 lb
