SLIDE1 -So Your first slide will be self introduction....Type the topic i.e Confidentiality BY your name.

SLIDE 2 -Introduction:

Confidentiality in health care refers to the obligation of professionals who have access to patient records or communication to hold that information in confidence.

SLIDE 3- Definition: Confidentiality can be defined as the ethical principle or legal right that a physician or other health professional will hold secret all information relating to a patient, unless the patient gives consent permitting disclosure.

SLIDE 4- Importance Of Confidentiality: Patients routinely share personal information with health care providers. If the confidentiality of this information were not protected, trust in the physician-patient relationship would be hard to maintain. Creating a trusting environment by respecting patient privacy encourages the patient to seek care and may also increase the patient’s willingness to seek care.

SLIDE 5- Thing that Should be Kept Confidential :

• Name • Address • Social Security Number • Diagnosis or Sickness

Slide 6- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Enacted on August 21, 1996 Assures that individuals’ health information is properly protected while allowing the flow of health information needed to provide and promote high quality health care and to protect the public health and well being. Applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses, and to any health care provider who transmits health information (OCR, 2003). Protects all individually identifiable health information held or transmitted by a covered entity or its business associate, in any form or media, whether electronic, paper, or oral (OCR, 2003).

Slide 7 - How to maintain Confidentiality? Discuss resident and client information only in a place that is away from other residents, families and visitors. Any item with a residents name or identifying medical information should never be placed in general trash receptacles. They should be shredded for appropriate disposal of confidential information. Do not keep a copy or make copies of resident information Never discuss patients in an elevator, in a hallway, cafeteria, or any other public place within or outside of the facility. Maintaining Confidentiality

Slide 8- What we MUST do: • When speaking with a patient about their health, do so in private • Patients information should never be discussed where others can hear • Ensure personnel requesting information have a legitimate need for the information • Patient records are secure and kept in locked places

Slide 9-Effective Training Training can be effective if done when a person starts working for the company and is reinforced on a semi-annual basis. All health care staff should continuously monitor the office to ensure there are no potential patient confidentiality concerns.

Slide 10- Conclusion: Conclusion Patient confidentiality and privacy are a very important aspect within jobs in the healthcare industry. Maintaining confidentiality will ensure quality care by showing that your patients can count on you for maintaining privacy and respect for their care and their medical records. Confidentiality issues are also a standard of practice related to ethical and professional healthcare
