in titration why do we need to degassed 7 up before titration?
In the titration we need to determine the % of phosphoric acid or Citric acid present in 7-Up (I hope this is the aim of your experiment also).
We should remember that 7-Up is a carbonated drink. It contains CO2 gas under high pressure in the can. This gives us the effervescence when the can/tin is opened.
Under high pressure, CO2 gas dissolves in water to form carbonic acid. This carbonation will effect our experimental result. Hence before titration, 7-Up should be degassed either by heating or by vigorous shaking. All CO2 gas will be removed (decarbonation). This ensures that we can determine the % of Phosphoric acid/Citric acid only present in 7-Up.
