Critical size is defined as the real size of material that causes the escape of neutrons to such a level that minimum one neutron always left behind for every fission reaction.

Critical mass is defined as the mass corresponding to the critical size of every fission reaction. Critical mass is used to categorize the fission reaction as subcritical, critical and supercritical. For subcritical condition, the fission reaction would not occur because the mass of fissionable material is less than the critical mass. For supercritical condition, the mass of fissionable material is greater than the critical mass.
