ETHICAL CHALLENGES

Ethics is the code of moral principles and values that provides standards for good and bad behavior. Ethical challenges or ethical dilemmas also known as a moral dilemmas,are situations in which there is a choice to be made between 2 options ,neither of which resolves the situation in an ethically acceptable fashion.

some examples of the common medical ethical issues includes,

  • patient privacy and confidentiality
  • transmission of diseases
  • relationships
  • end of life issues
  • informed consent
  • malpractice and negligence
  • issues related to physician assisted suicide

how to handle ethical challenges:

1 identify the ethical issues .the ethical issues exist in a broad sense whenever one's action affect others.in a workplace ,a managers decisions might affect employees customers,suppliers creditors and shareholders

2 identify alternative course of action

3 using ethical reasoning to decide on a course of action.ethical reasoning skills are are essential to making ethical decisions.

application of ethics:

  • identify the problem
  • collect information
  • consider issues of accountability
  • consider the setting
  • identify who has power in the situation
  • use the resources that are available to you
  • evaluate the options
  • put the plan into action

Ethical standards promotes the values that are essential to good communication ,such as

  • trust,
  • accountability,
  • mutual respect
  • fair medical care

many ethical standards in medical care ,including informed consent,protection of privacy and maintenance of confidentiality provide a grantee for respect for persons.

some common ethical questions asked to the interviewee

  1. what should family members and health care providers do if a person refuses treatment that promises to be medically helpful?
  2. who should make health care decisions for patients when they are unable to communicate or decide for themselves?
  3. when should life sustaining treatments such as breathing machines and feeding tubes be started,continued or stopped?
  4. what should patients do when they do not understand what professionals are saying and feel they are not offered the opportunity to participate in their own health care decisions?

Care decisions can also involve a conflict between the needs of the individual and organization or between the organization and society.four approaches are there for this ethical decision .it includes,

  • individualism
  • justice
  • utilitarianism
  • moral rights

An ethical committee can be included for better functioning of the hospital ethics and helps to avoid dilemmas it includes nurses ,physicians,social workers,chaplains etc

Medical ethics committee serve primarily in the following areas,

  1. providing education on ethical questions such as workshop on withdrawing life support
  2. policy makes the committee proposes ,analyses,and reviews institutional policies on difficult ethical issues
  3. case consultation includes reviewing difficult ethical cases and make recommendations on alternative course of action
